Standard Universal Textiles is an Australian owned textile manufacturer. The company has an in-house software development team with extensive Progress skills and experience.
Some years ago, the company had adopted the Lexmark Optraforms based output formatting technology. Optraforms allowed advanced output formatting from a Unix system for an affordable price. However, the system has a major drawback. Whilst the report formats are constructed on a PC using an Optraform native editor, the merging and output management occurs in the printer itself. That means that:
- It is not possible to produce a formatted output electronically (e.g. PDF). Page has to be printed and then scanned first if an electronic image is required.
- Each printer requires a special Optra Memory chip that adds around $900 to the purchase cost of each printer
- Because of the form size and memory restrictions, each printer requires a customised list of forms. This results in additional management overhead. It also means that when a printer is taken out of production for, say, repairs, it is not possible to replace it with another printer without clearing and re-loading the required forms.
- The company is fully dependent on high-end Lexmark printer. The printers themselves have been extremely reliable. However, the company is not able to benefit from favourable printer prices offered by other manufacturers.
NUVU solves all of the above problems. It is easy to implement, easy to use and offers far more advanced formatting features. It also offers easy UNIX/Linux integration. We are using NUVU in all our new systems and have enjoyed more than 12 months of trouble free operation.

The Plumbing Shop has been using NUVU format for our purchase orders, quotes, invoices and statements since April 2003 and apart from a few teething problems, which have all been attended to we are very happy with the product.
The quality of the output is excellent and more professional and economical than our previously pre printed stationary and printing to a laser printer rather than our dot matrix gives a much quicker output.
The fax and email services are an added benefit.
We feel that the returns on our investment in Nuvu have certainly been justified.
Thanking you,
Keri Crellin.
System Administrator.

Epicentre piece for Sterland Software
Having already revolutionised the way in which users of outmoded legacy systems present their all-important business documents, Sterland Software’s NuVu Reporting Suite has found its perfect match in an enterprise resource program called SYSPRO.
The two packages have been combined at a clothing distribution company called Epicentre and this software marriage has proved to be so successful that the firm will soon be used as a reference site for SYSPRO application partners throughout the world.
It’s an exciting development which will open NuVu to a potentially lucrative global market.
Epicentre originally purchased the highly-regarded SYSPRO system to manage its business operations and discovered that by integrating it with NuVu it created an even more powerful and efficient tool.
NuVu Reporting Suite Version 4.0 was released late last year and has proved to be a saviour for users of character based applications with its ability to produce smart, professional, graphics rich business documents.
“Originally, the SYSPRO application required the user to request the business document, wait for it to open in MS Word and then print,” explained Michael Van Dartel from Sterland Software.
“Although the re-formatting of the SYSPRO text output was one of the main reasons for Epicentre purchasing NuVu, it is the automatic electronic delivery of these documents that has proved to be most beneficial to Epicentre.
“With its built-in fax server and utilisation of existing e-mail applications, documents can be faxed or e-mailed via the web in PDF or in native NuVu format to multiple destinations automatically, thus improving business efficiency.”
Anne Mulder, from SYSPRO application partner Proactive Integrators, said that after a couple of minor enhancements were made to NuVu to ensure the two products were even more user friendly SYSPRO clients from across the globe would be directed to Epicentre to examine this match made in software heaven.
“Already, people have been quite excited by what we have told them about SYSPRO’s compatibility with NuVu,” she said. “When the refinements have been made it will be an even more powerful product.
“It will be totally integrated and the plan going forward will be to promote it that way.”
